CriCKET Report for Aug 3rd 2002                       35 overs game

Don’t know if it is was due to the lush greens, or the cool breeze from the pond near by or the big shady tree to rest under there were 13 players from each side who showed up to play very enthusiastically on what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the entire summer so far. It was a pleasant surprise to see such a huge turnout, maybe if the trendsetters had known beforehand what was in store for them towards the end of the day, they would have much rather enjoyed a couple of more hours of sleep dreaming about Britney Spears. Alas for the third time in a row they got their rear ends kicked in royal fashion by the NewWaves who showed full command and superiority in all departments of the game thoroughly outplaying them.

For a moment it looked as if KP was going to run through the NewWaves batting line up like a bulldozer for he got rid of Baddam, Uday and Chandru in quick succession. But the ever-dependable opening bat of Sumeet and the newly found “sensation” Sai were there to lend some solidarity to the innings. Sumeet was his usual self-nudging here and there for his customary singles and two’s while Sai played some glorious shots through the midwicket and long-on areas of the bowling of Madhu, Yatin, Naren and Badri.

After the two had put on a good partnership, Yatin got the better of both of them by dislodging their furniture. NewWaves couldn’t afford their middle order to fizzle away and they had the right man for the job in Zia. He steadied the middle order and played a very sensible innings given the situation. Newcomer Ravi’s batting debut turned out to be an unlucky one after he was caught in a bad mix up with Zia. There were some arguments even after the end of the game on who should have walked out. But that’s the game of cricket and hope everyone takes it in the right spirit as we are here to have fun and only fun!! Opportunities come every week and hopefully Ravi will have a big game in the next few weeks ahead for he certainly looks capable of doing do.

Hard hitting Mr.Big guy “da man” Sumanth from whom we expect a lot these days after his sensational knock of 41 a few weeks ago caved in for a meager 2. Dhananjay also did not have a good at bat since coming back to join the team after missing a few weeks. Finally it was up to the captain Kuldeep who was coming off of a fiery 58 the past week and Mr.”Solid Foundation” Kishore to carry on with the innings. Kuldeep failed with his bat this time but Kishore played a superb knock in his usual style keeping the ball on the ground at all  times and kept the scoreboard moving at a rapid pace the same time. He had 5 neatly timed boundaries frequenting the long on and long off region consistently. NewWaves finally scored 171 with extras coming in second with 36. KP, Yatin and Naren were the pick off the bowlers with 3 wickets each and Badri chipped in with a couple.

Trendsetters Innings:

Another disastrous performance from Trendsetters who have a very strong batting line-up on paper but did little to show that in terms of their batting skills. The entire team had 6 boundaries compared to NewWaves 14. Only 3 players crossed double figures speaks volume of their not so fruitful innings. Only Ragu, Madhu, Kuljit and Yatin offered some resistance but they too didn’t last very long once they got going. There is very little to write about rest of the teams batting performance. Chetan has been struggling off late to find his form that has been eluding him the past few games. Just a matter of time before he gets out off his lean patch and regains form to torment the NewWaves. Trendsetters expected a huge innings from the stylish Prashanth, but it wasn’t their day or his and he was gone for a duck. Unexpectedly some form of resistance came from the other newcomer Prashanth who tormented the Trendsetters with his unorthodox style of batting. Adding to their frustration was the 102-degree heat. Both he and Yatin dug in and were determined to play the reminder of the overs even though both of them knew they were fighting an uphill battle. So it was just a matter of time before the inevitable happened and NewWaves romped home in style. Adding to the 81 scored off the bat were 33 extras which pushed the score to a respectable 114. But the scores were no indication of the total domination by the NewWaves batsmen and bowlers. It wouldn’t do justice if I fail to mention the sensational one handed catch that Sumeet (don’t read it as Sumanth – I love to take a dig at the big guy) took tumbling backwards and in the process hurting himself. But I am sure he is doing fine as I saw him enjoying some hot Thai food for lunch in Irving 2 days later. Who knows may be that’s the way he spices himself and prepares for the next game.

Sai Talpa has been the pick off the bowlers and the most consistent one for the NewWaves in the past few weeks. Trendsetters have been struggling a lot against him trying to figure out his line and length. He also got good support from Baddam and Dhananjay.

After the game Baddam was taken for a ride by Kishore and other NewWaves for lack of discipline on the field. When all others were toiling in the heat, Mr.Cool was enjoying himself and keeping cool under the shady tree while the game was in progress. Obviously this rubbed on the wrong side for a few guys and they let him know about it. Little did he know that they would make him stand as the umpire next day against  Team X. Is this what they call “what goes around comes around”?

Finally don’t know what’s in the water NewWaves are drinking, everything is going great for them at the moment and they are firing on all cylinders under Kuldeep. 3 wins in a row and the pressure has certainly shifted to Kuljit. He better find an answer very soon, if not he and his team are in for a long summer and it ain’t fun. I am sure it is nothing difficult or insurmountable for them and they will definitely claw their way back up. Just a matter of time before they give the opposition a run for their money. NewWaves shouldn’t become complacent and should continue playing their attacking cricket.

Here is hoping for all of us to have a wonderful game of cricket next week. Until then focus turns on to other priorities in life. Audios Amigos!!
