The 37th regular season ODI game between the Trendsetters and Newwaves had to be postponed by a day due to heavy rains the previous two days. But that didn’t seem to curtail the enthusiasm displayed by Newwaves who showed up in full strength on a wet and chilly morning. Some of the trendsetters were busy napping in their beds to escape from the rain gods. It didn’t make any difference in the end as their pals who decided to show up were caught napping on the field. Now don’t ask me which was better.
TS won the task and decided to swing the magic wand. The only music that was heard was the ball missing the bat and Niraj Babaria’s stumps dislodged by Madhu. The other music that was heard on the field was the pain that the Newwaves had to go through while fielding. The field was wet, slippery and anything hit hard or slow at them was difficult to stop and you could feel the sting on their palms because of the cold weather. On the whole conditions were bad for both the teams. Fair enough you would say.
There were no first ball sixes from Kuljit this time around, instead he decided to get his singles and as usual was determined to sweep everything pitched on the off stump. He was run out at the end by Uday who dropped the catch but made amends by throwing in time to catch the ex captain short of his crease. Speaking off catches I don’t think we had seen so many dropped catches in a single game so far this season. TS being the beneficiary of so many misfortunes but they failed to capitalize on the situation.
Sumeet and Mani steadied the innings by playing sensible cricket. Raghu soon replaced Mani as the scoring rate had dropped down. Complements of sumeet he was soon run out going for a suicidal second run that was not there to begin with. Maybe he couldn’t wait to take his smoke break as the square leg umpire :-). Chetan got his 48th wicket when he sent back newcomer Pavan by rearranging his furniture a bit and Yatin was snapped behind the stumps by Zia off the very first ball he faced. He stood his ground and cried foul but Steve Bucknor sorry Mani had no hesitation in showing the exit sign. Few words were exchanged and emotions ran high, hey but who said life was fair? Kishore came into the attack and removed the twin towers Sumeet and Sumanth. Madhu did finally hang on to oust Sumeet after he had grassed couple of earlier chances. But Sumeet in his own style had already done the damage in the company of Mani who came back to have a second go with the bat. Both of them played a stellar knock in seeing their team reach a respectable total of 106 in 30 overs. Madhu, Sai and Kishore were the pick of the bowlers from NW’s while Chetan was the most expensive. Every NW player tried his luck with the ball on this day except the author of this report. The author being a team player kept his cool and never complained :-). Goddamn Kuldeep.
Rain or shine who gives a damn, it is a given fact that someone in NW’s always finds form. Can we change the name of Giribabu to Yuvaraj Singh? As the Brits would have said, this guys stands tall in the middle, scares the opposition and gives one whack with his willow (I meant “bat” for the dirty minds) and the ball thuds to the boundary and crashes into the ropes. On the other end Kuldeep, Sridhar and Chandru were dismissed cheaply. Chandru is determined not to raise his stinking average beyond 3 I guess. Madhu took over briefly and played a very good knock scoring 13. Raghu decided to take the fight to the opposition single handedly and bowled with renowned fire in his belly. Who said smoking is injurious to health? He along with Yatin and some nifty work behind the stumps by Kuljit saw the departure of Madhu, Zia and Uday. Chetan’s bad run with the bat continues and the jinx is still on though he managed to cross 5 this time. And suddenly the TS’s were back into the game with a bang.
In my last report a few months back I remember mentioning Sai Talpa as the “newly found sensation”, well he ain’t new anymore but the dude is still a sensation in my books. Continuing from where he had left off in the past few matches he was determined and said to himself it aint over till the fat lady sings. He found an able partner in Kishore and both of them saw the innings through and sealed the victory for the NW’s. Both of them kept their composure and never went for the big hits as there were quite a number of overs left and no hurry whatsoever. Kishore was adjudged man of the match for his all-round performance and rightly deserved so. Mr. Foundation is also becoming Mr. Consistent on the NW’s team. He has put together a string of “not outs” lately, has carried the bat through the end on many occasions and to top it off on this day he was Mr. Perfect behind the stumps also and did not concede any bye.
As of this week the record stands at 22-16 in favor of the NW’s. With hardly about 8 more weeks for the season to wind down and rain threatening to cancel some of the games the pendulum is certainly tilted in favor of the NW’s to command supremacy over the Trendsetters and earn bargaining rights for the overall 2002 season victory. But with Naren, KP and lazy Baddam all set to return for the TS pretty soon, things are certainly poised for an exciting finish. Hope Y’ll will stick around and enjoy the ride till the season finale !!
Meanwhile let me go back and continue sipping the fine red wine, which tastes even better when your wife is not around. Hola amigos !! Have fun, it’s just a game !!
