His 25 and two wickets made Niraj Babaria an obvious choice for the man of the match award, but his all-round contribution was just as important. He varied his pace intelligently in a miserly spell of gentle seam, got two wickets. Kuldeep, who won the toss, slipped to 44 for five but were heading for recovery while Chandru and Sai Petluri added 40 runs for the sixth wicket through positive stroke play and excellent running between the wickets.
A superb exhibition of bowling on a blameless pitch reduced Newwaves to 44-5 wickets off 13 overs. The catalyst to this collapse was the smart run out of Shoban, off a sharp field, by Kuljit. In the second over Kuljit ran out Shoban with a direct hit from backward square leg. A couple of chances went begging as Sai Petluri batted resolutely to save the situation.
Just three boundary hits were struck in the entire Newwave innings. Only Sai Petluri achieved any fluency while scoring 38 off 65 balls. In statistical terms, Petluri's innings was exciting, but in fact it was a laboured innings, apart from the three streaky fours.
Despite an unbeaten 38 from number five batsman Sai Petluri, with the exception of Uday P (16) the rest of the Newwaves batsmen failed to make good contirbution and Newwaves side scored 105 for 6 in their allotted thirty overs.
A target of 106 should have been comfortable, but it was not to be. Fine seam bowling from Giri Babu, Uday P and Chetan Jaitly reduced the TrendSetters to 73-4.
Hairsh Baddam (19) and Niraj Babaria (25) played beautifully to set up victory. With the game all but won, Rajesh R backed-up too far and was run-out by Sai/Uday.
Niraj Babaria produced a magnificent innings and turned the game on its head in an 5th wicket stand of 40 with Harish Baddam, before Niraj was caught for 25 with 4 runs still required. In tense finish, at the end it was left to Sumanth to hit the winning runs. Sumanth T batted admirably to hit the winning runs to see TrendSetters home by 1 wicket with 17 balls to spare.
After the match TrendSetters Skipper Yatin Bhuta told me: "This was the greatest performance that I've seen from the boys since I took over as Captain. Everything seemed to have gone against us, but we still ended up winning."
Comments from Sumanth T: "This was a wonderful team effort and it was wonderful to witness such an invigorating performance from a very youthful and enthusiastic team."
This was a brilliant, scintillating game which those present will never forget.
