Chetan
hero of Trendsetters win.
Kuljit-Singh - 19 Aug 2001 (Scorecard)
It was Second time lucky for Chetan as the TrendSetters cruised to victory. Chetan showed his class on Sunday 8/5/2001with score of 41. In this match he confirmed his class with a superb 20, an innings described by Kuljit as sheer class and quality. The entertaining innings saw TrendSetters reach their target of 135 with 0.3 overs to spare. He hit 1 four and two huge sixes on another warm, sunkissed day and was adjudged the first Man of the Match.
Their eventual total
of 134 all out did not set a challenge to a confident TrendSetter batting
order. TrendSetters know how to
play cricket in exactly the right spirit. If the players concentrate on their
specific roles and responsibilities, then the right result should follow.
Trendsetters won the toss and sent NewWaves in. Kuldeep and Sumeet opened the batting for NewWaves and played the TrendSetters medium-pacers steadily. Chetan and Raguram did not trouble the NewWaves batsmen. Kuldeep-Singh was in particularly good form, and played the ball well through the gaps. Sumeet struggled to score freely and was dismissed by Krishna Prasad (KP) after he had made 8.
Zia Haque (2) did not last long. Uday P joined Sai Amuluru out in the middle and the two put on a good partnership. Captain Kuljit had to take it on himself to bowl the bulk of the overs. Without the services of Upendra T, TrendSetters had to rely on Kuljit-Singh and he did not disappoint. Kuljit delivered when it mattered most, picking up four wickets for just 20 runs. From this point onwards, NewWaves lost wickets at regular intervals in trying to push the scoring rate. They were let down by their lower order as Sanjay Singhvi & Kishore M once again were unable to add runs to their total. . Every one would once again remember Sanjays wicket. KP bowled Sanjay with a low full toss.
Anil Yerram (26) did a bulk of the scoring, driving magnificently through the off-side, pulling the ball effortlessly and cutting the ball with authority. The boundaries flowed off his bat while at the other end the Jagdish struggled to get the scoring going. Anil hit the ball straight to the Zia and set off for an impossible run but he never had a chance, as Zia at mid wicket, threw straight over to the wicketkeeper Kuljit. Anil Yerram had made a sparkling 26 that included 4 boundaries. Jagdish was steady in his innings of 9.
NewWaves ended
up with 134 all out off their allotted 30 overs, a total which
TrendSetters were confident of overhauling.
For the first time in the history of NewWaves batting, no one scored a DUCK.
A superb Opening partnership between Asad Ansari and captain Kuljit-Singh set TrendSetters on course for victory. Both seemed relaxed and confident. Together they added 54, in 9 overs which was not only in the safety zone but put them in sight of victory.
After the dismissal
of Kuljit the NewWaves bowlers started to bowl better and that made life harder
for Satish Arravalli and Praveen Singh. TrendSetters needed to keep their cool, requiring 77 with
plenty of overs to spare and seven wickets remaining. Satish (8) played and missed a few times at
the start, but he worked really hard and grafted for his runs, clearly showing
that he not only has the talent but also the temperament. Praveen Singh
(5) did not last long
Of the NewWaves bowlers, medium- pacer Uday P in particular was pathetic. He bowled too many short deliveries in his 5th over and was regularly pulled to the on-side fence. He conceded 13 runs in his 5th. His only consolation was the wicket of Satish Arravalli but by then the damage had already been done.
Chetan Jaitly came in at the fall of Vamsi’s wicket and took charge of the game. Chetan and Noman systematically took the game away from the NewWaves. Other big partnership developed between Vice Captain Mohammad Noman & all rounder Chetan Jaitly. They put together a sixth wicket partnership of 28 runs.
Zia Haque was brought back into attack in the 25 over. His second delivery turned sharply inside (kept low) and Noman was beaten all ends up. Noman had made 20 with a huge six and a boundary.
NewWaves seemed to have a chance of defending their total of 134 when Raguram was finally dismissed playing a lazy stroke; He hit a ball from Anil to Sumeet at mid-on, who completed the catch easily. Trendsetters were 133 for eight, but Krishna Prasad (KP) clubbed his side home in the final over with a push through the covers for a single.
Trendsetter’s
extraordinary success over recent times is not only due to the talent of its
players. It also owes much to an attacking philosophy.
What made the win even more special for the TrendSetters was the fact that they were only playing with 9 players and the manner in which they fought back.
There was so much jubilation all around as the TrendSetters players ran onto the ground (congratulating each other) to celebrate a great victory.
What were the highlights of the game? "It was a fabulous effort all round. Kuljit–Singh brought us back into the game with his good spell of bowling. One of the features was that we put a good squeeze on them, because at one stage they were looking at 170-plus. We have become better at doing that. We then had a great batting start, 'Asad' came in and went for it from the start, whilst Kuljit–Singh batted the way that we wanted, and then partnership between Noman & Chetan came in and took it on for us."
